HAVEN HENS

Started Pullets for Backyard Flock Owners

Hen Sales

We are entering our eighth year of helping backyard flock owners add one or more ladies who are fully feathered and ready to be immersed into to their flock.

Avoid chick rearing catastrophes, unanticipated roosters and biosecurity blunders with started pullets.

Due to customer requests for hens already laying come spring, we are offering hens started earlier then ever before. All birds featured below hatched late summer and are already fully feathered, acclimated to the outside weather and quite enjoy their run. They will be seven to eight months old in April, with many already laying.

Since 2015, the cost of chicks and rearing costs has doubled. While we have been hesitant to raise prices and had previously maintained prices for most breeds, we have to in order to continue to raise chickens to support our youth mentorship horse program. Plus, with the age of this batch of birds being twice the age of previous offerings, providing eggs sooner, the birds are priced to cover the added feed and bedding costs that one would normally incur to get a hen to that age.

The prices below reflect the spring 2026 prices, with ladies twice as old as previous years to save time inaugurating and bring you eggs sooner. One has three additional options at checkout with more information below if one would wish to have birds sooner or lower costs.

We will also utilize a reservation system to book a pick-up time that is convenient for you rather than our traditional hen sale dates. Thanks again for your patience and support last year! Please keep weather in mind when selecting your pick-up dates. While our hens are acclimated, if conditions are fridged we may suggest delaying pick-up, with prices adjusting accordingly if timing changes significantly. Please make sure you have an insulated, dry, draft-free coop if bringing home your additions over winter.

We aim to offer a third, younger set as we have traditionally done, with the started pullets being 3-4 months of age for an April pick-up. We will update the website with these birds for reservations in February.

Even with plenty of light, some breeds take longer to mature and come into lay (production) then others. While some of our past White Leghorns started laying by 18 weeks of age (4 1/2 months). Most common backyard favorites take a little longer to mature; Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons and Speckled Sussexes tend to start closer to 6 months with most colored egg layers starting a few weeks afterwards. Large bodied birds such as Brahmas and English Orpingtons require greater time and often focus on building their frame before they start laying.

Most chickens lay best with 14 to 16 hours of light. Over winter with less sunlight, supplemental light is needed for best egg production.
